Engineering Design & Prototyping

Looking for assistance with engineering design, prototyping, or 3D scanning/reverse engineering? USM’s Campus Ventures program can provide the tools and expertise.  Students, faculty and staff of the university are available to help realize your invention or engineering idea. Services include:

  • 3D CAD Design & Solid Modeling using a full commercial version of SolidWorks software.
  • Rapid Prototyping/short run manufacturing with an Objet30, 3D printing from any 3D CAD file.
  • Reverse Engineering/form capture using a Creaform Z800 handheld 3D Laser Scanner.
  • Machining and prototyping/milling of larger metal, wood, composite, and multi-material components is also available through a partnership between USM and the University of Maine’s Advanced Manufacturing Center.

SolidWorks

Dessault Systemes’ SolidWorks software is the industry standard solid modeling application used for engineering design, finite analysis, and technical drawings. USM teaches SolidWorks in the academic setting, however we also own a full commercial license of the software specifically intended for collaboration with industry.

Objet30 3D Printer

The Objet30 3D printer produces models and functional parts in a UV-cured, resin based polymer similar in texture and strength to ABS plastic. The build volume of the printer is 300 mm x 200 mm x 150 mm (approx. 11.8 x 7.9 x 5.9 inches). The printer has a build resolution up to 900 dpi in the Z-axis and up to 600 dpi in the X and Y axes and can build to .0039” of accuracy (depending on part geometry, size, orientation, and post processing method). It can produce parts in a variety of colors and materials, including lightweight plastic and high strength plastic.

USM is currently exploring the option to upgrade our printer to include clear plastic, high-temperature and Class 3 Medical Device capabilities (the option is available for our unit however we do not currently have that option installed).

Creaform Z800 Laser Scanner

USM’s Z800 Handheld Laser Scanner by Creaform gives us the ability to capture solid surfaces in real time using point cloud laser scanning and data capture. The Z800 scanner is one of the highest accuracy handheld scanners available on the market. The device is lightweight, very portable and can scan large objects on-site and outdoors. It has very high resolution – scans to within .0015” of accuracy and has .002” scan resolution.  The scanner is bundled with Rapidform XOS software for fast, accurate post processing and file conversion.
