Graduate study is different from undergraduate study in a number of ways. Being a graduate student means you will be working towards increasing your depth of knowledge in one particular discipline, instead of being exposed to a number of different disciplines as you are while an undergraduate. Graduate classes tend to be smaller than undergraduate classes, so your opportunities to interact with faculty are much greater.
Whatever your reasons for attending graduate school, it is important to start thinking about the admissions process early. Many graduate programs have November or December deadlines for students wishing to start the following fall semester.
Every semester the Office of Graduate Studies at USM runs information sessions called “Thinking About Graduate School?” for students who are interested in graduate programs either here at USM or elsewhere. Graduate Admissions Counselors are also available for individual appointments. For more information, visit the Office of Graduate Studies or call (207) 780-4386.
In addition, there are several websites that are useful for researching graduate programs. Both Peterson's and GradSchools.com can help in finding graduate programs and allow searches by geographic area as well as interest area.
