Suicide among Military Personnel:Assessment Guidelines and Treatment Strategies

With so many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan having experienced physical and mental trauma, health care professionals are encountering a significant increase in veterans and family members seeking help. In this course you will have an opportunity to develop a working knowledge of factors related to suicide among soldiers, reservists and the National Guard with an emphasis on understanding how PTSD, substance abuse and TBI complicate treatment. We will focus on:

  • how to assess a suicidal veteran efficiently, and engage the veteran in treatment
  • how to arrange for a psychiatric evaluation with an uncooperative client
  • co-occurring issues such as substance abuse, PTSD and traumatic brain injury
  • specific treatment approaches

We will also discuss services available within the Veterans Administration and Military Branches.

Peter Macmullan, Psy.D., is the Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta where he monitors veterans at high risk for suicide, ensures access to care, and provides ongoing treatment. He has worked in various settings including inpatient psychiatric units, outpatient and partial hospitalization programs. He has worked with individual clients, provided group counseling and has extensive training in family therapy. He has also supervised community based interventions with at-risk clients.
