IV Therapy for Registered Nurses

This program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to enable you as a nurse to perform your role in the administration of intravenous (IV) therapy. Topics of this two-day workshop include:

• distribution of body fluids and internal regulators of body water
• evaluation of laboratory data for fluid volume assessment
• identification of major cations and anions in the intracellular and extracellular fluid
• comparison and contrast of IV solutions (hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic)
• handling complications and troubleshooting problems, including no flow, fast flow, blood, backing up, and disconnection
• IV therapy documentation
• case studies of people at risk for fluid and electrolyte imbalances and therapeutic rationales for therapy
• CDC and OSHA standards
• performing IV calculations using macro- and micro- drip tubing
• practicing IV insertion techniques on mannequins
• practicing setting up IV-related equipment (pumps, PCA pumps, and syringe pumps)
