Building a Strategic and Value-Added Human Resources Department

This course can serve as continuing education for HR professionals maintaining certification. It addresses the HR body of knowledge sections 02 (Workforce Planning), 03 (HR Development), and 06 (Risk Management).

As a 'back-room' function, Human Resources departments operate most effectively when they can demonstrate their value. Learn how to identify key issues that impact the bottom line and how to put plans in place that ensure the department's efforts create impact. Learn how to transform your role into one that creates value for your or-ganization and earns you a 'seat at the table'. Key topics will include:

  • creating an HR vision and mission
  • internal consulting
  • conducting a gap analysis on your current HR processes
  • linking HR processes to organizational strategy
  • defining the HR strategic plan
  • measuring success
  • anticipating the effects of economic, global and social trends and their impact on human resource man-agement
  • managing risks - workplace security, domestic violence, performance and talent gaps

Kay Whitmore, SPHR, is vice president for human resources and administration at Acadia Insurance Company. She has an extensive background in all aspects of HR and is also a certified trainer in Crucial Conversations.
