Length of Stay (LOS):Strategic Innovations for Case Managers

Innovations for the reduction of LOS are emerging in case management departments throughout the country. These evidence-based practice strategies have proven to reduce LOS while ensuring the achievement of quality outcomes and patient satisfaction. Using rapid-cycle teaching methods, the instructor will explain strategies and discuss methods for their practical application in your own work-setting. Among the many strategies we will explore are:

  • discharge appointments/early discharge programs
  • "the ticket home"
  • multi-disciplinary communication boards in patient rooms
  • Hospitalists
  • centralized Admission-Discharge-Transfer Centers
  • collaborative complex patient discharge rounds
  • Expert Physicians program
  • patient throughput" systems
  • Emergency Department diversion

Clinical situations and cases, including tools for monitoring and measuring will be utilized to maximize this learning experience, promoting the transfer of this information to your hospital.
