Human Resource Basics: Giving Feedback/Performance Management

New supervisors often find it difficult to deliver effective feedback that will assist employees in their development. Feedback from supervisors helps employees enhance what they are doing well, identify problem areas so they can adjust behaviors and develop new skills and behaviors to improve performance. This morning session will provide you with the skills to be able to provide relevant, appropriate and timely feedback to staff. The focus will be on:

  • enhancing key communication skills for giving feedback
  • giving effective, consistent feedback in a timely manner
  • avoiding blame, judgment, and vague generalities
  • delivering feedback that is descriptive, specific and behavioral

In the afternoon, the performance management process will be presented, including performance planning, establishment of expectations and the provision of ongoing feedback. An emphasis will be placed on conducting fair and legal evaluations and how to make the entire process an integral part of maximizing performance. Participants will learn how to:

  • set and communicate performance expectations
  • monitor and track performance
  • prepare for a collaborative review
  • use performance reviews to increase individual productivity and development
  • help team members tap into their strengths and deal with performance that is not meeting expectations
