Human Resource Basics: Interviewing and Selecting Employees/HR Legal Issues

Hiring the right individuals for positions in your organization makes supervising them a much smoother process. In the morning segment of this class, we will focus on a structured approach to interviewing and selecting employees. Legal pitfalls and strategies for various situations will be included. We will discuss how to:

  • prepare for the interview and set the right tone
  • avoid discrimination
  • gather information from and provide information to the candidates
  • make valid selection decisions

Human resource legal issues can pose a steep and dangerous learning curve for those newly functioning in supervisory positions. The afternoon session will provide supervisors with an awareness of employment related laws such as EEO, ADA, FMLA, and Wage and Hour. The focus will be on building knowledge of legal issues, enhancing skills to help prevent legal and financial risk, and to promote positive employee relations. We will discuss:

  • important laws that supervisors must know
  • how to avoid charges of discrimination and wrongful treatment
  • dealing with illness and disability issues
  • confronting problem employees

Susan Knapp has over 25 years of experience as a manager, much of it in nonprofit organizations, serving as director of human resources and as director of training. She has provided training for Fortune 500 companies, universities, goverment agencies, and hospitals including AT&T, Air Products, Indiana University, Purdue University, the United States Air Force, and Lehigh Valley Hospital. She received her Six Sigma Black Belt training through Acuity and the Ohio State University.
