Certificate Program in Co-Occuring Conditions of Mental Health and Substance Abuse

A Collaboration between the Co-Occurring Collaborative Serving Maine and the USM Center for Continuing Education

Individuals and families typically do not face substance abuse and mental health conditions as separate isolated challenges. Many, if not most, of those who seek behavioral health care have intertwined issues of mental health and substance abuse. Knowing how to welcome, engage, assess, and respond to complex conditions with an integrated approach is critical to supporting recovery. Through this certificate program, health and mental health care professionals will develop the pre-requisite values, knowledge and skills required to provide integrated treatment to persons with co-occurring conditions. This program is based on the competencies as currently defined in Maine to provide integrated care but is relevant to health professionals from any geographic region. In this certificate program, participants will:

  • discuss ways to welcome and support an empathic and hopeful attitude in the provision of integrated services
