Construction Documents & Contract Administration

This course will present the value and importance of how construction documents define the rights of, responsibilities of and relationships among all the parties that are necessary for the successful administration, construction and completion of any project. The architect/engineer (A/E), the contractor(s) and owner and all the other project participants must work within guidelines (and legal parameters) for a successful project from conception, through design and construction, to facility management and owner occupancy.

At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to use their knowledge of the construction process to improve the quality and efficiency of the design, specification, construction, and management of the built environment. Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the various phases of the construction project process, associated timelines and appropriate documents to be utilized
  • Understand the contractual relationships, roles and responsibilities of the project team participants: owner, contractor, architect/engineer and suppliers
  • Implement standard construction contract administration procedures from start-up, to submittals, to progress meetings, to final payment
  • Be familiar with and be able to utilize standard principles of construction contract administration
  • Understand general condition of the contract as it pertains to payments, changes (time and money) and contract close-out procedures
  • Attain a general understanding of the various construction delivery methods commonly in use today with a brief overview of the pros and cons of each method.

These learning objectives will be reinforced through the use of a sample project, mock meetings and class activities.
