Ethical Decision Making

Using material from the Institute for Global Ethics and the work of Rushworth Kidder, author of How Good People Make Tough Choices: Resolving the Dilemmas of Ethical Living, we will explore the nature of ethics and ethical decision making. Usually we are not in great conflict over choices between "right" and "wrong." Our dilemmas occur when two "rights" or two of our core values come into conflict with each other and we find ourselves with difficult decisions to make. Should I push for my client's needs or consider the needs of the larger group? Should I always apply the rule, or might there be an exception I should make? Should I tell on my friend or say nothing and remain loyal? As a guideline, we will use the Outline of Ethical Conduct in Decision Making which includes:

  • ethical awareness
  • values definition and developing a code of ethics
  • dilemma analysis
  • dilemma resolution

If you have friends, co-workers, supervisors, siblings, spouses, children, (you name it!), then you have faced an ethical dilemma at some time in your life. Please bring a dilemma which you have struggled with in your professional or personal life and be prepared for a day of lively discussion!
