Using Motivational Interviewing with Chronic Illness

Chronically ill patients present a special challenge to health care providers. Making lifestyle changes, maintaining those changes, and preventing further complications can be a daunting process for the patient and difficult for the health care professional to provide adequate support. In this workshop we will explore patient ambivalence and the work of motivational interviewing (MI) in the health care setting. During this two-day workshop, participants will learn:

  • dynamics of working with patient "ambivalence"
  • principles and fundamentals of motivational interviewing
  • ways of integrating MI theories into health care approaches
  • how to adapt the intervention to different populations and stages of change
  • direct approaches you can use to create an atmosphere of change towards health

Motivational interviewing is used with individuals and groups in settings including traditional behavioral health counseling, nicotine addiction, alcohol and other drug use, and, most recently, chronic health problems. MI is culturally appropriate, ethically correct, and patient-centered in the spirit of compassion. This workshop is appropriate for health care providers, doctors, nurses, health care coaches, and case managers whose patients/clients are struggling with chronic health care issues.
