Unified K-8 General Education and K-12 English as a Second Language

etep application handbook

ETEP currently offers a unified K-8 initial certification and Master’s degree concentration merging general education and special education. Beginning in May 2008, ETEP launched a unified initial certification and Master’s degree concentration merging K-8 general education and K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL). The 54 credit hour concentration spans two years, six semesters, from May to May. The degree is a Master of Science in Education, with a concentration in Teaching and Learning focusing on ESL.

The concentration is designed so that school districts can provide their educational employees, eg, educational technicians, a pathway to initial teacher certification. District administrators, university faculty, and the candidate together plan an individualized combination of job responsibilities and certification requirements. A team comprised of a university faculty member, the candidate, and school faculty and administrators design an Individual Internship Plan (IIP) with one year for a general education internship and one year for an ESL internship. Employment in a school is not a prerequisite for admissions.  Part-time internship placements in general education and ESL are arranged for candidates not employed as educators in schools.

The majority of program coursework is offered online. Some summer courses are offered in an online and blended format combining online and on campus sessions. The program schedule observes school breaks and provides several three or four week intervals with no program activities throughout the two years.

The sequence of online ESL courses in the program is available for currently certified teachers seeking the K-12 ESL endorsement. Teachers interested in the endorsement should also contact Walter H. Kimball as indicated below.

Applications currently being accepted for the May, 2009, cohort group. For more information, please contact:
