Dr. Goldenberg will present research findings about what most challenges teachers of English language learners: promoting development in two distinct but related and complex domains:oral language and reading. He will highlight what we know—and don’t know yet—about this important intersection of skills.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of California at Los Angeles, Professor Goldenberg has taught at Stanford University Graduate School of Education since 2007. Recent publications include Research on English Learner Instruction in Breaking Through: Effective Instruction & Assessment for Reaching English Learners (M. Calderon, editor, 2012), and Reading Instruction for English Language Learners in the IRA’s Handbook of Reading Research, Vol. IV (2011). A recent article by Professor Goldenberg, Unlocking the Research on English Learners: What We Know—and Don’t Yet Know—about Effective Instruction, appeared in this summer’s AFT’s American Educator, Vol. 37, No. 2.

Following Dr. Goldenberg’s talk, a panel of Maine ELL teachers, students, and advocates as well as the speaker will respond to audience questions and comments.

Free and Open to All. Contact hours available for teachers.

Co-sponsored by the University of Southern Maine’s Department of Literacy, Language, and Culture and Southern Maine Area Resource Team (SMART) for Schools
