After coordinating the Counselor Education program and serving as chair of the Human Resource Development department during the 1990s, he moved into college and university administration.  He previously served as associate dean of the College of Education & Human Development, interim director of University Libraries, and dean of USM's Lewiston-Auburn College.

Dr. VanZandt’s academic interests are in the areas of Group Process & Procedures, Career Development, and School Counseling. He has co-authored three books and numerous journal articles, and has made over 100 presentations at national, regional, and state conferences. One of the highlights of Dr. VanZandt’s career was consulting with and training educators from nine former Soviet-bloc countries to create career guidance programming for their schools.

Dr. VanZandt’s current scholarship project (along with colleague Dr. Susan Jones) is the development of a supplemental text about the effects of hidden agendas on group dynamics.
