New Cinema Studies Minor

Film StillsBeginning in Fall 2013 the Department of Communication and Media Studies will be offering a minor in Cinema Studies. This new minor offers students the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of one of the most culturally significant media of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  With broad-based and specialized courses on the analysis, history, and theory of many different kinds of cinema—from mainstream Hollywood to the international avant-garde—the Cinema Studies minor will provide students a multidimensional understanding of movies as forms of art, products of industry, and modes of communication.

The Cinema Studies minor consists of 18 credit hours of Media Studies courses. In order to declare the minor students must have a minimum 2.0 G.P.A. and have completed the core competency in College Writing English.


Core Courses for Cinema Studies (9 credit hours):

CMS 284 Introduction to Cinema Studies

CMS 286 or 288 History of International Cinema to 1945 or History of International Cinema Since 1945

CMS 394 Theories of Cinema

Electives (Select three courses for a total of 9 credit hours):

CMS 210 Topics in Media Criticism I (only film or cinema courses)

CMS 286 or 288 (History of International Cinema to 1945 or History of International Cinema Since 1945, whichever was not taken for the core)

CMS 310 Topics in Media Criticism II (only film or cinema courses)

CMS 380 Film Genres

CMS 486 Women in Film

CMS 484 Topics in Film
