Every spring, USM students, staff and faculty participate in Husky Day of Service by engaging in community service projects with local organizations for the day. At our last Husky Day of Servivce, 179 students, staff and faculty volunteered for a total of 540 hours with 18 local organizations!

The 8th Annual Husky Day of Service will be held Friday, April 14th, 2017!

The day of events will be*:

  • 8:45 AM - Spirit Bus Leaves Gorham
  • 9:30 AM - Site Selections & Welcome Rally at Sullivan Gym
  • 10:30 AM - Depart for Service Sites
  • 2:00 PM - Projects End

*For those participating at LAC, Good Shepard Food Bank will host volunteers from 8:30 AM - 1:00 PM.

Listed below are the community partners we have lined up for 2017 #HuskyDOS!

Animal Refuge League Deep cleaning, or organizational projects, or outdoor grounds
maintenance & cleanup.
Back Cove Clean Up
(FLEX PROJECT)
Students will learn a little about the history and ecology of Portland's back bay
and then walk over to pick up trash and recyclables around it.
Boys & Girls Club Spring cleaning.
Center for Grieving Children The rooms used by the families need to be cleaned and art supplies
refreshed and organized. 
Cultivating Community Weeding, cleaning, sheet mulching, laying woodchips.
Garbage to Garden Helping to bag compost.
Good Shepherd Food Bank
(LAC Campus ONLY)

Pack for our supplemental nutrition program (CSFP – Senior Brown Bag)
or our BackPack Program; assisting the inspection team to pre-inspect
donated, salvaged food and sorting it for storage.
Goodwill Art project for creative types, education majors or ASL/Linguistics
students. Volunteers will be matched up 1:1 or 1:2 with clients as
friendly visitors assisting clients with their participation in the project.
Goodwill Life Works Art project for creative types, education majors or ASL/Linguistics
students. Volunteers will be matched up 1:1 or 1:2 with clients as
friendly visitors assisting clients with their participation in the project.
Habitat for Humanity - ReStore Reconstructing window racking system in store.
Maine Children's Museum  Help stuff Easter eggs and prep crafts to make special memories
for Museum & Theatre families.
Maine Narrow Gauge Rail Road Cleaning train cars in the museum.
Maine Veterans Home Yard work/window washing/etc., wash wheelchairs, etc.
Partners for World Health

The volunteers will be helping us process medical supplies for
shipment to Africa and Southeast Asia.

Frannie Peabody Center Putting together safer sex kits, organizing prevention material, 
making pins for events.
Portland Gear Hub Fixing kids' bikes.
Portland Stage Reorganizing the "libary" of scripts.
Portland Trails Potentially installing benches and working to maintain
trails in Canco Woods.
Preble St  Prepare, serve and clean up for Lunch service in the
Resource Center Soup Kitchen.
Ruth's 3 Rs Sorting, restocking teacher store, putting away pallets of product
in the warehouse, but as to the specific things it changes each week.
Salvation Army Cleaning nurseries and potentially classrooms.
Space Gallery Help us do some cleaning and physical projects that are hard for
the staff to accomplish during the course of the year. If there's
time, we'll also do some preparation for upcoming events.
Strive U 

Outside yard work, painting, cleaning in order to prepare the
STRIVE U campus for the incoming students.

Clean up litter and debris around the base of the lighthouse and within the gaps of the granite slabs of the breakwater
