Community Engagement and Career Development at USM gives students the opportunity to gain experience in the field, explore career directions, develop global citizenship skills, and give back to the community. Our office is a resource to multiple audiences:
Students: We have strong community relationships throughout Southern Maine and on campus. We can connect you to a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities including service-learning experiences, volunteer and internship opportunities. We can also help with your transition into the work force by providing you with career guidance, helping you prepare your resume and cover letter, and many other services.
Community Partners: Our commitment is to mobilize USM students, faculty, and staff to address community-identified needs in partnerships marked by respect, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. We can connect you with our faculty about service-learning experiences, as well as help you find student interns, employees, or volunteers.
Faculty and Staff: We are here to help develop community connections for you and your students. You can use us as a resource for assisting in service-learning experiences, finding internship site placements, and preparing students for entering the workforce.
What is Community Engagement?
Community Engagement at USM is a pedagogical approach that integrates academic learning with meaningful experience or work in the community. It is an experiential focus on learning that must be embedded in the curriculum. Students in community engagement bring theories, knowledge, and practices developed through academic reading, writing, and analysis to specific topics-related study and work in community sites. Community Engagement advances USM’s mission to foster in students “a spirit of critical inquiry and civic participation." We believe community engagement is a critical element of USM’s commitment to the Maine community.
