How do I Catch GroupWise Mail Tagged as {SPAM?}?
Instructions for WebAccess
We are all suffering from an increased amount of unsolicited commercial email, or "spam." IT Network Services has taken steps to try to stem this tide a bit. We have installed a system (a computer, not a person) that will examine incoming mail items and score them on dozens of different tests in an attempt to identify spam. If the score for a particular piece of mail exceeds a certain threshold, that mail is tagged in the subject line with "{SPAM?}". When the score reaches 3 times the threshold value (the worst of the worst), the mail file is not delivered but is placed in a quarantine area for a week before it is deleted. This may occasionally cause legitimate e-mail files to not be delivered. Therefore, if you think that you should have received mail but have not and have carefully checked any spam rules that you have set up, you may contact the Help!Desk at 780-4029 and ask them to check for quarantined mail addressed to you.
If you do not want any mail addressed to you to ever be quarantined, the Help!Desk can have your e-mail address can be put on a "white list." In that case, all mail will then be delivered to you. However, other mail delivery agents along the delivery path may still tag the mail as SPAM.
Mail tagged as spam is the "best guess" of a computer, so it can miss real spam. It can also tag legitimate mail as spam (a false positive). For this reason, we recommend that you do not delete these items outright, but rather move them to a folder called Junk Mail that you review at your leisure.
You can write a rule to catch items that bear this spam tag, and move them to a folder for later review.
- Create a folder called Junk Mail.

- Choose Options > Rules.

- On the Rules screen, choose Type: Move to Folder. Then choose Create.

- On the Create Rule screen, tell GroupWise what to look for by entering:
- Rule name:
SPAM Tag - First dropdown list:
Subject - Second dropdown list:
Begins With
Note: Use "Begins With" - not "contains" - here! - Text field:
{SPAM?}

Select your Junk Mail folder, and click Save. At the list of Rules, click Save again, then click Close. - Rule name:
- Review your Junk Mail folder occasionally to make sure no stray messages got in there by mistake!
