Dialup Configuration: Macintosh Eudora Mail Users

Before you can use Eudora more efficiently using USM's dial-in facilities, you need to make some one-time, Eudora configuration setting changes. After completing the following steps on your home computer, you will have more control over requesting and sending your e-mail.

  • Launch Eudora; if you are prompted for a password, then select the "Cancel" button.
  • Using the mouse, select the "Special" menu item and its "Settings..." submenu item.
  • You should now see the "Settings" window; in this window, select the "Checking Mail" icon on the left side of the window.
  • Make sure the rectangular box, which follows the words "Check for mail every," is blank.
  • Next, using the downward scroll bar on the left side of the window, select the "Sending Mail" icon.
  • Make certain the "Immediate send" check box, on the right side of the window, is blank.
  • Close the "Settings" window by clicking once on the "OK" button. Finally, quit the Eudora program.

The following steps assume you are not dialed-in (i.e., connected) to the USM modem pool. You will initiate the dial-in process through Eudora whenever you want to check for new e-mail and/or send your e-mail messages. To check for new e-mail, send replies and/or send new messages:

  • Launch Eudora.
  • Use the mouse to select the Eudora menu item "File" and its submenu item "Check Mail".
  • You will be prompted for your Eudora password; after entering the password, Eudora will initiate the dial-in process (e.g., it will activate MacSLIP and request a "Connect" through that software.
  • When you have received all your messages, use the MacSLIP icon at the top right of your menu bar and select its "Disconnect" item. When disconnect completes, you are no longer connected.
  • At your leisure, read your e-mail, create replies and/or new messages, etc. When replying to or sending new messages, you should notice there is no longer a "Send" button in the message window; the button now appears as "Queue".
  • Click on the "Queue" button each time you want to send a message; doing this saves your messages, in a queue, for later transmission - when you ready to send these queued messages, use the mouse to select Eudora's "File" menu item and its "Send Queued Messages" submenu item — doing this initiates a request to MacSLIP to dial-in (i.e., connect to USM's modem pool).
  • After the final queued message is sent, use the MacSLIP icon at the top right of your menu bar and select its "Disconnect" item.
  • When disconnect completes, you are no longer connected.
