University of Maine System Account Information and Activation Key
What is it and why do I need it?
All students and employees in the University of Maine System are assigned a computer access account. The Univerity of Maine System Account (formerly the UNET Account) gains you access into computer labs and classroom machines, Horde email, Blackboard, Library computers, USM wireless network, UNET dial-up modem pools, network access in residence halls and PeopleSoft, if applicable.
All University of Maine System accounts include a username@maine.edu email account.
The University of Maine System uses this email address for official university communications. In addition, email generated from Blackboard gets sent to the University of Maine System account email address.
How does it pertain to me?
Students
The University of Maine System account gets created when a student is accepted into a degree program or after registering for a university course. Work-study or Department-Funded student employees will be using this account to login to PeopleSoft to enter their timecard. You will have access to PeopleSoft after Student Payroll has received your student hire paperwork from your employer.
Faculty and Staff
The University of Maine System account gets created after the Human Resources Department receives your employment paperwork and enters you into PeopleSoft. In order for Faculty to request a Blackboard course or login to Blackboard, you must know your University of Maine System account userid and password.
For those employees who have a USM network account with a GroupWise mailbox, we recommend that you forward your University of Maine System account to your USM email address.
How do I get started?
Before a University of Maine System account can be used for any purpose, it must be activated through the web site at http://mail.maine.edu. (Choose Account Activation.) To activate your account, you will need your Student Identification Number (usually the same as your Social Security Number, without any dashes) and your account Activation Key.
You must obtain an Activation Key by visiting either the Help!Desk in 144 Luther Bonney Hall on the Portland campus, the computer lab in Bailey Hall in Gorham, or the computer lab at Lewiston-Auburn College. Please bring a photo ID for verification of identity.
