CGI Web Counter

Instructions

To use the CGI Web Counter, simply insert the following tag line into your HTML file and change 'webmaster.dat' to the name of your department's data file (e.g., acs.dat, uct.dat, summer.dat, etc.):

<img src="/cgi/wwwcount?df=webmaster.dat&dd=C&pad=N&ft=0"
align="absmiddle">

Web publishers should be aware that the counter will only increment upon a page request from an IP address that is different from the previous request. Refreshing the browser will not increment the counter, nor will accessing the page from a different browser on the same machine.

Please note: the page counter is very limited in what it can tell about site traffic. Many developers feel that site activity should not necessarily be on display for all visitors to see. USM Computing offers an alternative tool, Urchin Web Analytics, which compiles very detailed information on site statistics that can be made available to designated users, but not the general public. For more information, see the Urchin page, or contact Robin McGlauflin, 780-4009.
