Connect Apple OS 9
Security Warning
Wireless networks by their nature are not secure. You should not use the wireless network for activities that involve the transfer of sensitive data like usernames and passwords, or the viewing of websites, emails or files containing private information, unless such transfers are protected by encryption like SSL. Some signs that you are using SSL encryption is if the URL of the website begins with "https" instead of "http", as well, most web browsers will have a padlock icon that appears somewhere at the bottom of the browser window when your connection is encrypted.
Reliable methods for securing wireless networks are currently being developed. It is USM's intention to implement a secure wireless network sometime in the future.
- Open the hard drive icon, find the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder, navigate to and
open the Apple Extras folder, then the AirPort folder, and open the
AirPort Admin Utility program. If you don't have an AirPort card installed, you'll see the
following (anomalous) message:
The required AirPort software was not found on this computer. Certain base station configuration options will not be available.
Press Quit. - If your AirPort card has been properly installed, but is turned off and the wireless software has never been activated, you'll an alert screen to turn it on. Click OK. The Airport Setup Assistant software window will open. Make sure the radio button next to "Set up your computer to join an existing wireless network" is selected. Then click the right arrow to continue.
- If you are in an area that is covered by USM's Wireless Network, you'll see the a screen indicating that the wireless network named "tempest" has been found. (See a list of covered buildings.) Click "Go Ahead" to continue configuring your computer.
- When the configuration has been completed, youll see the another screen. Press Connect Now to connect to USM's Wireless Network.
- Apple's Control Strip allows you to access to a variety of computer settings no matter what program you happen to be in. To activate the Control Strip, go to the Apple Menu, choose the Control Panels folder, and select the Control Strip.
- Select the radio button next to Show Control Strip, and click in the close box in the upper left corner of the window to close the Control Strip window. At the bottom of the screen, usually on the left-hand side, you'll see a horizontal little wedge shaped tab. Clicking on the tab expands and collapses the tab. When it's expanded, you'll see a bullet to the left of "tempest" if your computer is connected to USM's wireless network. If you are having trouble connecting, see Troubleshooting Your Connection.
