"Three concepts embody my experience as a member of the 2013 Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program: direction, preparedness, and inspiration. Daily exposure to a diverse collection of research fields allowed me to confidently solidify my own career and educational directions. One-on-one instruction, support, and guidance from my mentor [Dr. Jennifer Trowbridge] and her laboratory team prepared me far beyond any textbook or lecture for the trials and triumphs of a career in biomedical research. Complete immersion in the world of research problems, discoveries, and the underlying human compassion that drives today's leading researchers have inspired anew my desire to create a place for myself among these individuals. In short, my time at the Jackson Laboratory has helped me to take the first great steps from student to scientist." Jennifer Ditano, USM Student
