First of all, let us offer our sincere CONGRATULATIONS to those that graduated this year! Completing college is a wonderful accomplishment!  Remember to check out the Destination Graduation page to make sure you've done everything required to receive your diploma.

USM offers special services for those about to graduate with their Bachelors or Masters. We coach graduating students on résumé  development, job search strategies, and graduate school options. For an appointment, please stop by Career Services on either our Portland or Gorham campuses.  If you prefer, you may call 780-4220 (Portland) or 780-5330 (Gorham) to make the appointment. We also offer walk-in hours for your convenience.

 

Rules of Thumb for Job Hunters

  1. 80% of all job openings are not advertised.

  2. The best way to get a job is to ask family and friends if they could help you get a job where they work.

  3. The next best way to get a job is to apply through the "Employment" page of a company's own web site

  4. 70% of job hunters use both newspapers and the internet to look for employment.

  5. Every year, about 12 million people find work through employment agencies.

  6. Mail a letter and your resume to 100 employers asking for a job interview and  you could expect about 3 interviews.

  7. Employers interveiw four people for every hire they make.

  8. Showing up 5-15 minutes last for a job interview will disqualiy you 60% of the time.

  9. The first question asked during an interveiw is usualy: "Can you tell me a little about yourself?"

  10. 80% of employers regularly conduct reference checks.
