2012 STEM SCHOLARS

GET TO KNOW SOME OF THE STUDENTS IN THE CURRENT STEM SCHOLARS PROGRAM

My name is Matthew Bourgeois.  I am enrolled in the mechanical engineering program at USM. Born and raised in Auburn, Maine, I am excited to be back after having spent many years living away from my hometown.  I graduated from Edward Little High School and attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where I earned a BA in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. After college, I went to Seoul, South Korea where I taught ESL for several years. After returning from living abroad, I worked in various social service positions, including a term as an AmeriCorps volunteer at YouthBuild in Lewiston, Maine.

My name is Corey Bryant and I am a transfer student with a marine science background from Southern Maine Community College and The University of Tampa. I am majoring in Environmental Science at USM, to acclimate my current major with my past academic interests. My hometown is Portland, Maine which I enjoy because of its proximity to the beautiful coastline and social atmosphere of the city. My past internship experiences have taken me to the coasts and open waters of Hawaii, Florida, Oregon, and Maine. In my free time, I enjoy surfing, writing and performing as a folk singer/songwriter, and immersing myself in my academic field

My name is Raymond Khuu and I am a freshman at USM studying Electrical Engineering, following my graduation from Deering High School.  I am a PC gamer and enjoy biking. I started to be interested in electrical engineering after visiting colleges eight years ago with my older brother. The senior projects I saw on the trip inspired me to choose this field of study.

My name is Justin Hayes. I am from Plymouth, Maine and majoring in Computer Science. My area of interest is leveraging Internet technology to help build small agile businesses. I also hope to be involved in bringing more innovation opportunities to the State of Maine.

My name is Victoria Henderson, majoring in Technology Management at USM. After a 35-year career as a medical assistant, I was given the opportunity to go after the college degree that I had never achieved.  In the summer of 2010 I signed up for courses at Southern Maine Community College and two years later, I graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technologies, and was even named SMCC’s Student of the Year for the Class of 2012! When I am not studying, I like to hike in the woods, take pictures , listen to great music, read good books, keep in touch with my nine siblings (who live in seven different states), and work in a garden.

My name is Brian Libby and I’m majoring in Mechanical Engineering at USM. I live in Portland, Maine. I am inspired by the process of designing objects we use every day and their intricate construction is something that has intrigued me from a young age. Learning is a process and I know my college venture has just begun. The future is sometimes scary to think about but I’m excited about the possibilities ahead.

Hello, my name is Louis Logsdon. I just completed two years of schooling at SMCC. Born and raised in Maine, I live in Steep Fallsand. I am currently a full-time student at USM, majoring in Technology Management. Even though I did get an Associate's degree from SMCC, there is more for me to learn. I like spending time with my wife and children, tinkering on computers and working around the house – enjoying my talent as a good cook.

Hello, my name is Shuan Mahmoodi and I am majoring in Computer Science. I live in Portland, Maine, where it feels safe and is very beautiful. I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, playing games with my little brother, and tinkering with the computer.  I am really glad to be here right now, as I continue my academic education here at USM I want to make the most of the opportunity to get well educated, having good teachers as well as people who worry about students’ education. My dream is to become a great computer engineer.

Hello, my name is Mladen Markovic. I am a freshman at USM, majoring in Computer Science. My hometown is Brcko, Serbian Republic of Bosnia. I envision myself learning the skills necessary to acquire a high paying job so that I can help the rest of my family overseas. I am on the right path to achieve it and very happy about it!  I enjoy playing soccer and tennis, hanging out with friends, and collecting foreign currency.

My name is Sarah Sweatt and I am a freshman majoring in Environmental Science. My academic goal is to achieve at least a master’s degree in my choice of academic field. I am interested in the politics and laws connected with environmental science, along with research and fieldwork. After college, I would really like to work for an organization, such as The World Wildlife Fund, finding solutions to environmental issues and working towards a cleaner planet.

Hello, my name is Andrew Trueworthy. After graduating from SMCC’s Electrical Engineering Technologies Program and spending six months in the electronics industry, I decided to advance my career through the Technology Management program at USM. My hometown is Freeport, Maine.  I like spending time outdoors fly fishing and volunteering for the Maine Appalachian Trail. I have a wide range of hobbies; one of them is bicycle maintenance.  I found potential for growth within the fluid power and various controls courses during my associate’s degree career and chose to pursue a bachelor degree in USM’s Electro-Mechanical Systems.
