EYE 117: Nature, Self, Society

(Faculty: Lisa Giles | CTEL Learning Designer: Pieter Tryzelaar)

EYE 117, Nature, Self and Society, is new online course that is being launched in the Spring 2014 semester. This Entry Year Experience course is being taught by Dr. Lisa Giles. CTEL Learning Designer Pieter Tryzelaar collaborated with Dr. Giles on the course design.

The course is being delivered through a combination of Blackboard and a custom built course website, which allows for the utilization of a variety of learning technologies, including Crocodoc, Google Drive, and VoiceThread. EYE 117 is a writing intensive course that focuses on critical thinking and reading comprehension. The students will spend the semester working in facilitated peer writing groups.

The real challenge of the course design was trying to figure out how to best translate the traditional structure of the Entry Year Experience into an digital platform. The result is a media rich online course that has numerous guest speakers, virtual tours, streaming films, video lectures, and digital roundtable discussions.
