And, of course, Casco Bay, which offers some of Maine's most beautiful natural scenery. Spend time on the bay and its islands aboard Casco Bay Lines Ferry, the oldest ferry service in America.
Downhill skiing and snowboarding within an easy drive, including Shawnee Peak, the longest-running ski area in Maine known for its night skiing, or, for another example, Sunday River, with 131 trails and the largest snowmaking system in the East. Cross-country trails are easily accessible closer to home, on golf courses, farms, and at groomed facilities.
It's been reported, more than once, "Portland has more restaurants per capita than any other U.S. city except San Francisco." We can't document the number per capita, but one thing is certain: it's about more than lobster.
One indication of the depth and quality of local music is Greetings from Area Code 207, a recording project established in the Portland region to showcase local acts. The seventh installment of the series was released in the spring of 2008.
