Welcome Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Students, Professors and Teachers

EAST is a special program within USM’s College of Science, Technology and Health (CSTH).  We provide support to students who wish to pursue their education and career in STEM fields including Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, Environmental Science, Physics, Linguistics, Chemistry, Geosciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Technology.  EAST is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to serve STEM students with disabilities, either disclosed or non-disclosed.

Students from Bonny Eagle and South Portland high schools are engaged in EAST's Experiences in STEM for High School Students program. Students have visited USM-Gorham during College Student for A Day and have visited USM-Portland during Transition to College Day.

Environmental Planning and Policy major Josh Monroe is working as an EAST intern with Dr. Karen Wilson, Department of Environmental Science, on a project involving sorting zooplankton in samples collected from the Kennebec River.

Physics major Renae Poole has been awarded an EAST Undergraduate Research Fellowship with Dr. Julie Ziffer, Physics Department, for her project, Meteoric Analogs of B type asteroids.

EAST PROGRAMS

Students and instructors for ESP 233 course in 2010
  • ESP 233 course, 1 to 3 credits - Students work together and with professors and experts to explore STEM majors and careers, create a community of STEM learners, gain skills, learn about USM, and more
  • Undergraduate Research Fellowships - 15 URFs are awarded each year
  • Internships - College students and high school juniors and seniors are eligible for paid internships
  • Tutoring - Peer and expert tutoring is available for STEM students
  • High School STEM Experiences - School year collaboration and a Summer Research Institute are offered in conjunction with high schools in southern Maine
