The University of Southern Maine Department of Engineering is dedicated to providing its students with a high-quality, accessible, and affordable engineering education based on a foundation of mathematics, science, and liberal arts. Responsive to the needs of our local industry partners, we offer baccalaureate degrees in electrical engineering, including a concentration in computer engineering, and mechanical engineering with emphasis on electromechanical systems and materials science. Consistent with ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission standards, we prepare our graduates to:
- function as engineers in technologically-intensive firms;
- succeed in post-baccalaureate study;
- transfer their engineering skills to different environments; and
- contribute to society as broadly educated, articulate, and ethical professionals and citizens.
As a unit of a public, regional, and urban comprehensive university, the Department serves both traditional and non-traditional students with broad and diverse backgrounds. A strong sense of community is promoted through active participation in student group activities and membership in professional organizations. Our mission includes being a technical resource to the community by linking the teaching, research and public service capabilities of the Department to the needs of industries and organizations of Greater Portland and the southern Maine region. Such partnerships also translate into internship opportunities for our students and employment opportunities for our graduates.
