If you would like to take ESOL classes at USM and you are a Maine resident, the first step is to meet with us. Please call Bart Weyand at 780-4419 or Barbara Trentacosta at 780-4365 to make an appointment.
Admission to USM for students whose first language is not English is based upon a student's academic record and a TOEFL score of 213CBT/80 iBT for undergraduate students, and 213CBT/80 iBT or 250CBT/100 iBT for graduate students. The SAT exam is highly recommended for all undergraduate applicants. Official records of secondary (and previous university) education must be sent with the application form at: http://usm.maine.edu/admit/application-instructions
Students whose TOEFL scores are below TOEFL 213CBT/80iBT and who are otherwise admissible to USM may be admitted to USM's English Language Bridge (ELB) program. These students may also be eligible to apply for federal financial aid as residents and take other credit-bearing courses depending on the level of English. Students who are admitted into the ELB must sign a contract agreeing to the obligations of the program. Newly admitted students will be tested during orientation and placed into the appropriate ESOL courses.
All students enrolled in ESOL courses (except the TOEFL preparation course), whether as part or full- time students, are entitled to use the University facilities which include computer services, academic support services, the library, and gymnasium.
If you are interested in taking a class for English for Speakers of Other Languages at USM, we are very interested in speaking with you. The following form is for students who live in Maine, and who do not need a student visa.
