The purpose of this program is to reduce homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism, etc etc on our campus and thereby to make our campus a safe and free environment for all members of our community - regardless of sexual orientation or gender identification. By agreeing to become a participant in Safe Zone Project, you agree to undergo training and to serve as a resource for people seeking clarification of issues of sexual diversity.

After the training sessions you will receive resource materials and a Safe Zone placard used to indicate that they have been through the training and become an “ally.” The Safe Zone placard is a message to LGBT individuals that you are an understanding, supportive, and trustworthy individual. LGBT individuals will know they can come to these allies for help, advice, or just to talk with someone who is supportive of their sexual orientation.

Please RSVP to Sarah Holmes at sholmes@usm.maine.edu or phone 780-5767 (sessions with fewer than 5 people may be postponed or rescheduled).

Boren Awards

Come to this information session to learn more about Boren Scholarships for studying abroad and the application process for this award.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Boren Scholarships provide $10,000 for a semester abroad or $20,000 for a full year abroad. The Boren Fellowships provide graduate students $12,000 for a semester abroad, $24,000 for a year abroad, or $30,000 for a combination of domestic and overseas student.

Foreign language study in the proposed country or region must
be an integral part of each application. Students should incorporate opportunities to develop or advance language proficiency through instruction and application inside and outside of the classroom. With the exception of French and Spanish, there are no minimum
language requirements. However, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the language and have a strategy for continuing
to study the language beyond the scholarship or fellowship period.

For more information about Boren Scholarships, attend this information session and visit their website at: www.borenawards.org.
