Assassins castPerformed as a revue in one act, ASSASSINS offers up nine sharply drawn sketches of people who killed presidents of the United States – or gave it their best shot. The winner of multiple TONY Awards, Sondheim’s glimmering and flavorful score gives a nod to the all-American sounds of Foster, Sousa, and Copland. It remains provocative, innovative, riveting, and timely as ever in this election year. Directed by USM’s Ed Reichert. Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim; Book by John Weidman.

For event details and ticket reservations visit the Music Box Office or call 780-5555. Tickets cost $15 general admission, $10 seniors and USM faculty/staff, $5 students. TTY: 780-5646. Parking on campus is free for evening and weekend events.

Lauren Murphy

Lauren is a senior music education major in the USM School of Music. She has been a voice student of Judith James since 2007, when she was still in high school in Old Orchard Beach, and was also greatly influenced by Jaye Churchill, director of Musica de Fila in Portland.

In her freshman year of high school, she sang with the United States Youth Ensemble (USYE) and toured 7 countries singing a variety of great choral music. She was also a participant in Regional Fine Arts, and sang the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus in both her sophomore and senior year under Melissa Manseau. She has known she would study music since 8th grade, and finally settled on becoming a music education major upon entering USM.

At USM, Lauren has participated in Opera Workshop, Chamber Singers, Chorale and Jazz Choir. In addition, she has played trombone in the Concert Band during her senior year.

As a music educator, Lauren has taken every opportunity to be involved in teaching while a student at USM. She has been an active member of Collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Educators (cNAfME) throughout her university career, serving as secretary in her freshman and sophomore years. She will be student teaching in the next academic year, and plans to remain in the greater Portland area following graduation.

Outside of music, Lauren is cultivating a tiny farm of chickens and bunnies. She's always had pets, and has always known she wanted to do something with either animals or music, and has found a way to ultimately do them both.

Lauren's senior recital program was influenced by her hobby. She has selected a program of bird songs, in addition to a variety of sacred songs and early music repertoire from a variety of composers spanning the style periods. Her recital will be Sunday, November 4th at 8 p.m., in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus.

Student recitals are free and open to the public.
