On Friday, November 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., members of the University of Southern Maine Enactus team, formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), will be at the Scarborough Sam's Club to host the Let's Can Hunger Food and Fund Drive in support of Good Shepherd Food Bank.

The team will be hosting the drive as part of its participation in the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Project Partnership, an initiative sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company. Let’s Can Hunger mobilizes Enactus student teams in the United States to measure and demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger. Enactus teams will be organizing and executing food drives for urgent hunger relief to empower those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 14.7 percent of Maine households, or approximately 200,000 individuals, and one in every four children are food insecure. Maine is among the highest states in the nation, and second worst in the northeast, for its rate of food insecurity.

Individuals and businesses may support the food drive by donating a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, or cereal. Monetary donations will be accepted as well. All proceeds from the drive will benefit Good Shepherd Food Bank.
For more information about the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger initiative, visit www.letscanhunger.com.

Enactus is an international, non-profit organization that brings together student, academic, and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Guided by academic advisors and business experts, the student leaders of Enactus create and implement community empowerment projects around the globe. The experience not only transforms lives, it helps students develop the kind of talent and perspective that are essential to leadership in an ever-more complicated and challenging world. Enactus teams are active on more than 1,600 academic institutions in 39 countries. For more information, visit www.enactus.org.

David Wojahn

David Wojahn,

Winner of the 2012

Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize

David Wojahn is one of American poetry’s most thoughtful examiners of culture and memory. His poetry reflects political and social issues in American life, usually through significant popular culture events, such as the poem written about John Lennon. Wojahn’s original contemporary poetry made him the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation. Linda Gregerson said, "David Wojahn's World Tree is a book of consummate vision and artistry. Exquisitely cadenced, politically astute, large of heart, and keen of mind, these are poems of extraordinary moral penetration. They are also a joy to read: David Wojahn is working at the height of his powers." For more information on Professor Wojahn, visit his website at www.davidwojahn.net.

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!
