Elise Aurbach, Iran Specialist for Amnesty International, USA, calls Education Under Fire "One of the most powerful human documentaries I have ever seen... [exposing] an outrage that until now has received little attention -- the systemtic denial of an entire religious community of the right to pursue higher education in their own country."

On Tuesday, November 13th at 7 PM in Talbot Auditorium, a screening of Education Under Fire will be presented by the USM Baha'i Campus Association.  The film will be followed by a discussion including community members who have been directly affected by the oppressive actions of the Iranian government.

The Bahai's in Iran have been denied access to higher education for years and after developing their own underground education program are now being imprisoned for their attempt to learn. Come learn about what is happening and how you can help your fellow students around the world!

Two Men Ten Suns

Two Men Ten Suns
is set during the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and follows the lives of an American scientist, Chet Warren, and a Japanese admiral, Shigeru Yamakota. Each man battles his personal demons to win the first nuclear arms race. Doubts plague both, but neither can stop as their governments push them to develop the deadliest weapon.

A handful of the world's most powerful men knew of this desperate competition and buried all evidence deep in top secret archives. Some historians believe Japanese scientists were on pace with those of the Manhattan Project and were ready to test. Truman dropped the bomb to beat Japan to the punch.

History has criticized Truman's decision, but perhaps he knew a deadly clock was ticking as he gave the order to destroy Hiroshima. If intelligence had warned him Japan was close to using its Genzai Bakudan (atomic bomb) on an American city, he could not have risked delay.

Two Men Ten Suns is a gripping fictional account of this perilous episode.

About the Author:

Jeff Foltz has an MFA in creative writing from USM's Stonecoast program. His first novel, Birkebeiner, A Story Of Motherhood and War received an honorable mention award for fiction from the 2011 New England Book Festival. Foltz lives with his wife Sue in Camden, Maine.
