carilise school

"Kill the Indian , Save the man..." Richard Henry Pratt, founder of the Carilise Indian Residential School became a model for the forced assimilation of Native American children into white society. Ten thousand children were forced to attend between the years 1879-1918. Wabanaki people today are still being forced into non-native homes as a part of the assimulation process.

The TRC project is a historic five year plan to work with the state of Maine and will issue a report that includes recommendations for best child welfare practices for Wabanaki children and their familes.

Join our panel disscusion on the story of this groundbreaking work from two members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, Denise Yarmal Altvater and Esther Anne Alvateras.
