Little Star That Could

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

Full dome show

(Presented in the memory of Steve Innes 1955-2011)

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

This omni-dome show uses the entire dome as the screen for a visually immersive experience.

$5.50 - adults;   $5.00 children

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!

In the hands of playwright Sarah Ruhl, Virginia Woolf’s gender-bending satire becomes a lavish pageant of sex, style, and soul. Orlando, a man born during Shakespeare’s time, lives and loves through six centuries without aging and – fantastically – transforms into a woman along the way. This play is like a dream – strange, beautiful and not easily forgotten.

Composers EnsembleOn Friday, April 19 at 8 p.m. the Composers Ensemble brings another new batch of original works to the stage. The concert will be held at Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus. Admission is free.

The Composers Ensemble is an interesting group, directed by Daniel Sonenberg, made up of rather unique instrumentation that varies each semester depending on who signs up for the class. Each member is a performer, and about half of the members compose as well, each writing for the full ensemble, culminating in a full evening performance of new music at the end of each semester.  Gaining in popularity, these ambassadors of contemporary music are quickly becoming something to talk about.

SriniIn addition to premieres of works by Tim Burns, Peter Campbell, Ben Fox, Roy MacNeil, Aaron Pettengill, Dalton Ringey, and Paul Thomas, the ensemble will collaborate on several numbers with Indian master percussionist Srinivas Krishnan. A frequent collaborator with the great film composer A.R. Rahman, Krishnan will work intensively with the Composers Ensemble and some special guest vocalists to prepare a thrilling set, infusing the Showcase with a an exciting global flavor.

Admission is Free! Rounding out its eighth year of existence, the USM Composers Ensemble writes, rehearses and performs a full concert of new music each semester under the direction of founder Daniel Sonenberg. In Fall 2012, the concert was followed by recording sessions and a public release of the compositions - a new tradition that will continue this semester. The ensemble currently consists of 19 members, a small chamber orchestra; they recently made their Portland debut on the Back Cove Festival of Contemporary Music.

Members of the press, and those needing special accommodations to participate fully in this program, contact Lori Arsenault, (207) 780-5142, larsenault@usm.maine.edu. Hearing impaired: call USM's telex / TDD number (207) 780-5646.
