David Carey Jr.

Guatemala: In Words and Images exhibits materials from The Guatemala Collection: Government and Church Documents for Sacatepéquez: 1587-1991, and is the culmination of four years of work by USM students Chriss Sutherland and Lucas Desmond who were responsible for arranging and describing the collection. Some of the documents from this collection informed the new publication Distilling the Influence of Alcohol, edited by David Carey Jr., USM Professor of History and CAHS Associate Dean.

The Guatemala Collection: Government and Church Documents for Sacatepéquez: 1587-1991.

This collection spans an extensive historical period and comprehensively represents the demographic, social, and political reality of one of Guatemala’s most important departments. By providing evidence of the colonial and neocolonial structures of the Guatemalan government and Catholic Church, this collection shines a historic light on the present situation in Sacatepéquez and Guatemala more broadly. Guatemalan scholar and activist Christopher Lutz and two native Guatemalan archivists Eddy Gaytán and Héctor Concohá Ch’et assembled the collection throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. The materials are photocopies of original documents from the Archivo General de Centro América, the Archivo Histórico Arquidiocesano Francisco de Paula García Pelaez, both located in Guatemala City, and the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain.

Distilling the Influence of Alcohol: Aguardiente in Guatemalan History.

book cover Distilling the Influence of AlcoholSugar, coffee, corn, and chocolate have long dominated the study of Central American commerce, so much so that researchers tend to overlook one other equally significant commodity: alcohol. Often illicitly produced and consumed, aguardiente (distilled sugar cane spirits or rum) was central to Guatemalan daily life. Alcohol helped build family livelihoods, boost local economies, and forge the nation. It also shaped Guatemala's turbulent categories of ethnicity, race, class, and gender. Drawing from archival documents, oral histories, and ethnographic sources, the contributors to this volume investigate aguardiente's role from the colonial era to the twentieth century. Topics include women in the alcohol trade, taverns as places of social unrest, and tension between Maya and State authorities. By tracing Guatemala's past, people, and national development through the channel of an alcoholic beverage, Distilling the Influence of Alcohol opens new directions for Central American historical and anthropological research.

Vending @ USM is designed to create a lively atmosphere for our community on each of our campuses.  The University of Southern Maine invites local vendors to visit our Portland or Gorham campuses to sell and promote your items to over 10,000 USM community members (students, faculty & staff).

Woodbury Marketplace

Wednesdays starting in March of 2013. Join us for the Woodbury Marketplace. The Woodbury Campus Center on the USM Portland Campus is the Hub of Student Activity. Home to the USM Bookstore, Cafeteria, student organization offices, and diveristy centers, thousands of students visit woodbury each day.

Throughout the world, the market is where life happens. Friends, both new and old, come together. Vendors sell their goods. Chefs give samples of their cuisine. Musicians fill the streets with beautiful poetry.  There is a positive energy that surrounds this hub of the community. We are going to bring that energy to the USM Portland Campus each week.

Vendors will be different each week.

If you are interested in having a table at the Woodbury Marketplace, please fill out our online registration form: http://www.usm.maine.edu/studentlife/vending

Randy Pierce & Quinn

Randy Pierce and his guide “Quinn” climb Mount Monroe

The USM Office of Support for Students with Disabilities and The Maine Region of Guiding Eyes for the Blind invite you to an evening of adventure and inspiration as Randy and Quinn tell their tale of triumph!

“I didn’t plan to go blind; I didn’t plan to go into a wheelchair. But none of that is what defines my life, because we have full power to choose how we respond. The only thing a blind person can’t do is see.” Randy Pierce.

The White Mountain National Forest is home to 48 peaks over 4,000 feet in elevation. With heights ranging from 4003' to 6288', these craggy summits are known for their steep, rocky terrain and impressive views. Hiking in the White Mountains can be a daunting task for the heartiest among us but Randy Pierce doesn’t see a thing. Following the silent cues from his yellow lab, “The Mighty Quinn,” and feeling, listening, and visualizing the trails, he became the first blind person to climb all 48 of the 4,000 foot peaks in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Randy Pierce grew up fully sighted, but at age 22, within the span of two weeks, he lost all the vision in his right eye, and half in his left. For several years, he endured tunnel vision, the dark closing in from the edges. In September 2000, he went totally blind. It was at this time that Randy was given a life altering gift. “Ostend,” a handsome golden retriever from Guiding Eyes for the Blind opened up a whole new, independent world to Randy.  In 2003 the neurological disorder that claimed his vision, incapacitated Randy and he was in a wheel chair for almost two years.   Tragically at this time, Ostend died of cancer. Randy did not give up. He received the gift of Quinn from Guiding Eyes, a magnificent yellow Labrador retriever.   Quinn was especially chosen and trained to assist Randy as both a guide for mobility and sight.  Randy's perseverance and motivation along with the dedication and support of friends and professionals helped him to walk and run and to find a new passion in hiking.

Randy's overwhelming gratitude, led him to found 2020 VISION QUEST.

The evening with Randy Pierce and the “Mighty” Quinn is generously sponsored by:

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!

Fithian will perform Monteverdi’s great work, Hor che ‘l ciel e la terra, for chorus, soloists and a baroque instrumental group of strings, harpsichord and theorbo (a baroque lute).

The evening will also feature Mr. Fithian’s former students who have gone on to successful careers in singing.

Stephanie GilbertSoprano, Stephanie Gilbert '09, who went on to the Yale Opera School, will sing a challenging Fithian song No more kissing -AIDS everywhere accompanied by graduate student Derek Herzer, piano, and she will also perform the dazzling aria from Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Jason PlourdeBaritone, Jason Plourde '02, who continued his studies at the Indiana University Opera School, and like Ms Gilbert, is performing in New York, will sing the famous aria from Faust and join Stephanie Gilbert in a passionate duet from The Pearl Fishers.

Jennifer DeDominiciMezzo-soprano, Jennifer DeDominici '00, who continued her studies at the University of Colorado, will sing the famous arias from Carmen, a role which she performed with Colorado Opera.

Chamber SingersThe evening will conclude with Fithian’s setting of Schubert’s beloved song An die Musik, performed by the USM Chamber Singers, Robert Russell conductor.

Russell, a long-time colleague of Bruce Fithian, describes the concert this way, "The excitement in this program is generated as we showcase many of the myriad talents that Bruce has developed throughout his professional life. We will hear about Bruce the composer (as we feature several of his compositions), Bruce the performer (at the piano and organ, and as a singer), Bruce as a musical entrepreneur (as he presents several compositions with his St. Mary Schola), and Bruce the teacher (as we welcome back to USM several of Bruce's students who will perform in the recital)."

Of Bruce Fithian himself, Russell adds, "Bruce Fithian is a consummate musician, a beautiful interpreter of early music, and a colleague of the highest integrity. I have been privileged to know him and to make music with him."

Little Star That Could

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

Full dome show

(Presented in the memory of Steve Innes 1955-2011)

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

This omni-dome show uses the entire dome as the screen for a visually immersive experience.

$5.50 - adults;   $5.00 children

The emphasis of this series of four workshops is how educators and school leaders can collaborate on creating curriculum, instructional and assessment strategies to meet present Common Core standards’ mandates, and to ensure students possess 21st Century skills. The workshops will provide participants knowledge and skills to take back to their workplace colleagues, and share their experiences with other workshop participants in a community of learners’ environment.  In addition, the workshops use a scaffold approach so that knowledge and skills learned in one session form a foundation for what is discussed in the following sessions.  The workshops are also designed so participants can collaborate with each other on ways to incorporate the knowledge and skills into practice.

IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System

An omni-dome (full dome) presentation about the IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) probe.      Launched in 2008, the IBEX craft collects energized neutral particles emitted from the heliosphere: the "bubble" enclosing the solar system.   These collections enable the IBEX probe to construct an image of the membrane surrounding us.  The same membrane that protects the solar system from harmful galactic particles.

How does the IBEX probe work?    How does it communicate with Earth?

Join us for this fascinating full-dome show about the IBEX probe and its bold mission to explore the solar system's final frontier.

Show duration:  31 minutes

(Note: show presentation includes a night sky tour, so the entire program is approximately 45 minutes.)

For more information about this probe, visit http://ibex.swri.edu/

What leads people into teaching and what sustains this motivation? For many it is the possibility of making a difference in people’s lives. This innate motivation is fragile and needs to be cultivated and nurtured. Without this care, it can easily end up lost, forgotten, or buried under countless duties and responsibilities.

Join us for a presentation by Professor Jeremiah Conway, author of the recent book--The Alchemy of Teaching. The Transformation of Lives—invites us to consider and reflect on the often messy, wondrous, sometimes chaotic struggle for human change that occurs in classrooms.

His book, which has received glowing national reviews, offers educators a literary glimpse into the heart of a teacher and classroom. Through his stories we are given a gentle, yet potent, reminder that teaching matters, it’s a privilege and lives are at stake in it.

Presented by Jeremiah Conway

J conwayProfessor Conway (Ph.D. Yale) is a professor of philosophy at the University of Southern Maine. He has received the University’s Outstanding Teaching Award several times, as well as other prestigious awards. He has written over 40 published articles on philosophy, teaching, and his interactions with students.

As the world becomes more interconnected, integrated and intelligent, mobile devices are playing an ever-increasing role in changing the way people live, work and communicate.

Personal computing devices are becoming more and more portable — laptops, tablets, smart phones, USB thumb drives, etc., securing the sensitive information stored on those devices is more important than ever. The small size and portability of these devices mean they can be easily lost or stolen, placing both personal as well as corporate data at risk.

The USM School of Music is proud to host the Maine Music Educators Association and hundreds of student musicians from all over Maine who have been selected to perform in the MMEA All State Music Festival from May 16 to 18 on the USM Gorham campus. This coincides with the annual MMEA In-Service Conference, providing workshops and professional development opportunities for Maine's music teachers

Recognizing the importance of school music programs in the enrichment of the academic environment and intellectual development of students, Governor Paul LePage has issued a letter of appreciation to the students and festival organizers for their hard work and dedication.

This annual festival, now in its 60th year, includes band, orchestra and chorus ensembles. Students went through a rigorous audition process last fall to be selected to participate in this festival. Their rehearsals on Thursday and Friday on the USM Gorham campus will culminate in three separate concerts at the Windham High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 18th.

The All State Band will perform at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of Jermie Arnold. Professor Arnold is Associate Director of Bands at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University at Long Beach.

The All State Orchestra will perform at 3:30 p.m. under the direction of Robert Moody, conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra since 2008.

The All State Chorus will perform at 5 p.m. under the direction of Joseph Henry, member of the Eureka College faculty since 1991, and currently serving as an Associate Provost, Professor of Music, and the Director of Choral Activities. He has degrees in music education and choral conducting from the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine, and the University of Missouri, Conservatory of Music in Kansas City.
