invites you to join Andrea l’Hommedieu, Oral Historian at the University
of South Carolina, for a workshop on using oral histories in the
classroom. The workshop, designed for educators, will focus both on
ways use existing oral histories, and tips on creating your own oral
history projects.

Andrea L'Hommedieu, a librarian and oral historian, is currently head
of the Office of Oral History at the South Caroliniana Library, USC and
Treasurer of the South Carolina Archival Association. She formerly
served in Maine as director of the George J. Mitchell Oral History
Project at Bowdoin College and oral historian for the Edmund S. Muskie
Oral History Project at Bates College, both winning national awards in
2012 and 2008, respectively. Andrea also collaborated closely with
Museum L-A, Lewiston, Maine (2005-2010) to lead several community-based
oral history projects with mill workers, shoe workers and brick makers.

Any K-12 or college-level educators are welcome to attend, and the
workshop is especially recommended for teachers of social studies and
French. The event is ideal for those looking to meet the Maine
Department of Education's new recommendations on the study of
Franco-American history, but the techniques covered will be relevant for
oral histories of all kinds.

The event is free, but participants are asked to reserve a place
(contact details below).

This year’s academy boasts 98 middle school students. The final concert, which is free and open to the public, features the Academy Jazz Band, Chorus, and Concert Band. George Shabo, who has been with the academy since the beginning, has been the camp director for the past 12 years. The concert band director for the entire 20 years has been John Morneau. The Shabo and Morneau team also head up the Southern Maine Youth Band Day Camp, held each year in June.
