Little Star That Could

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

Full dome show

(Presented in the memory of Steve Innes 1955-2011)

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

This omni-dome show uses the entire dome as the screen for a visually immersive experience.

$5.50 - adults;   $5.00 children

 DINOSAURS AT DUSK!

more dinosaurs

A whirlwind time travel adventure back to the epoch of the dinosaurs!

We have to tell you that we've been waiting aeons to announce that we have a full dome, computer animated dinosaurs show! A larger than life extravaganza rife with roaring monsters from the ancient age: bounding, stomping, flying, hunting, and foraging frenetically above us.

Well, by heavens, now we can tell the world that the dinosaurs have arrived at the Southworth Planetarium! (Or, to get the verb tense right, they WILL arrive on September 6, 2013.)

Dinosaurs!

Propel yourself back through the epochs toexplore an Earth teeming with Pteradons, Triceratrops and, of course, the ferocious -and therefore wonderfully marketable- T-Rex!

Sir Richard Owen*

And, if we can say so, this is NOT your great great great grandfather's dinosaur show with slides and lethargic Sunday afternoon nature special narration. Instead, we're embarking on a causality violating adventure through time to discover a planet dominated by the largest land animals that ever set claw to topsoil.

Dinosaurs

This September, come back to the Southworth Planetarium and then venture back to the Mesozoic era for a personal odyssey through the realm of the dinosaurs.

Matinee and evening shows!

January 15, 2014
1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Southworth Planetarium
A brand new full dome computer animated show featuring a vast array of larger than life dinosaurs! A father and daughter travel through time to the epoch of the dinosaurs and learn the origins of flight.

This gripping memoir is both a personal story and a portrait of a distinctive New England place—Fall River, Massachusetts, once the cotton cloth capital of America. Growing up, Joseph Conforti’s world was defined by rolling hills, granite mills, and forests of triple-deckers. Conforti, whose mother was Portuguese and whose father was Italian, recounts how he negotiated those identities in a city where ethnic heritage mattered. Paralleling his own account, Conforti shares the story of his family, three generations of Portuguese and Italians who made their way in this once-mighty textile city, which was also home to many Franco-Americans.

Joseph Conforti is Professor Emeritus of New England Studies at the University of Southern Maine.

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!

January 18, 2014
3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Southworth Planetarium
A brand new full dome computer animated show featuring a vast array of larger than life dinosaurs! A father and daughter travel through time to the epoch of the dinosaurs and learn the origins of flight.

IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System

An omni-dome (full dome) presentation about the IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) probe.      Launched in 2008, the IBEX craft collects energized neutral particles emitted from the heliosphere: the "bubble" enclosing the solar system.   These collections enable the IBEX probe to construct an image of the membrane surrounding us.  The same membrane that protects the solar system from harmful galactic particles.

How does the IBEX probe work?    How does it communicate with Earth?

Join us for this fascinating full-dome show about the IBEX probe and its bold mission to explore the solar system's final frontier.

Show duration:  31 minutes

(Note: show presentation includes a night sky tour, so the entire program is approximately 45 minutes.)

For more information about this probe, visit http://ibex.swri.edu/

We are pleased to announce that Willo Wright, ProgramDirector of Seeds of Independence, will be the first speaker in this colloquium series.  Willo’s presentation takes place on Friday, January 24 from 3- 4:30 PM in room 102 Wishcamper on USM’s Portland Campus.  Seeds of Independence (http://www.seedsofindependence.org/), is a nonprofit, mentor and volunteer based organization founded to help at risk youth in Maine reach their full potential as independent, productive members of society. Willo was the 2011 recipient of the Maine Judicial Branch Advocate for Justice award.  She began her work with youth many years ago as a volunteer at Portland’s Center for Grieving Children and her advocacy efforts expanded as she realized her passion for helping youth at-risk for substance use and juvenile incarceration. Willo asserts the power of mentorship for helping young people to face and overcome adversity. She has served as a guardian ad litem, first for the Portland District Court and later for the state of Maine. Willo has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and women’s studies from Goddard College.

Willo became involved with Jumpstart, a program for first-time juvenile offenders. She and her husband, Tom Wright subsequently developed several programs devoted to helping at risk youth in Maine maximize their potential as socially responsible, productive adult citizens. Today these programs, summarized below, operate under the Seeds of Independence, headquartered at Brunswick Landing (the former Brunswick Naval Air Station):

  • Jumpstart: An eight-week alternative criminal justice sentencing program for first-time juvenile offenders.
  • Rebound: A 12-week program for repeat juvenile offenders that focuses on building self-esteem, moral character and self-reliance.
  • Beyond Long Creek Center: A mentor support program for incarcerated youth offering ongoing guidance after their release.
  • Teen Parenting Group: A program for teen parents focusing on parenting skills and goal setting for independent living.
  • Service Learning:  Projects designed to build youth skills, relationships and community commitment through exposure to new people and environments.
  • School Peer Mentors: A high school program offering peer support to students in need of positive role models.

According to Willo, “These programs are all mentor-driven…They’re all about relationships. We help young people learn to problem solve.  Most of these initiatives are intended to help promote resilience and instill healthy psychosocial adjustment in youth. They’re also inexpensive; it only costs about $130 a year to work with each young person using mentor volunteers.” In the service of the work they do, Willo and her volunteers have established collaborative working relationships with the courts, juvenile community correction officers, high schools in Brunswick, Topsham and Freeport, and with police departments and social service agencies.

This presentation is the first in a series designed to inform and foster critical discussion among professionals, students, families and the public on emerging issues and priorities for youth mental health in Maine.  As government funding shrinks for public mental health services, we are faced with the challenge of determining how families, schools and communities can help foster resilience and mitigate delinquency risk, including substance use, among our youth.  Please join us for this talk with Willo and take part in our roundtable conversation to discover ways to empower Maine youth and their families.

This is part of a traveling exhibition of more than 100 artists’ books made by international artists from 24 countries. The books and broadsides in this exhibit were made in response to the  March 5, 2007 car bomb that exploded on Al-Mutanabbi Street, the ancient street of booksellers, poets and writers, located at the literary and cultural heart of Baghdad, Iraq. This exhibition, curated by Beau Beausoleil and Sarah Bodman, aims to bear witness to the events on Al-Mutanabbi Street, and to collectively affirm that the right to a free exchange of ideas and culture in public space is never to be taken for granted.

January 29, 2014
1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Southworth Planetarium
A brand new full dome computer animated show featuring a vast array of larger than life dinosaurs! A father and daughter travel through time to the epoch of the dinosaurs and learn the origins of flight.

USM Associate Professor of Applied Medical SciencesS. Monroe Duboise, was awarded the University of Maine System Trustee Professorship at USM for the 2012-2013 academic year. The professorship offered Duboise more time and resources as he continued work on developing an anti-malaria vaccine that will be more stable, inexpensive and easy to produce in a wide range of locations. This research was also supported by a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Explorations grant

His research systematically integrates scientific research efforts with community and K-12 science education outreach using both USM undergraduate and graduate students in his lab. Duboise has enjoyed continuous federal funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and NASA since 2001, which has allowed him to bring public school teachers into his lab where they learn to teach rigorous scientific research methods to their students.

In this Trustee Professorship Faculty Presentation, Dr. Duboise will present his research, updating the community on the status of his research. He will briefly describe the background of his research interests and summarize the results of his prior research that led to the development of the vaccine. He will share highlights of his scholarly journey,  including collaboration with other researchers and the integration of his research into teaching and his work with students and the community.

Peril and Promise in a New Age: Discussion on the Changing Landscape for Public Comprehensive Regional Universities

Peril and Promise in a New Age: Discussion on the Changing Landscape for Public Comprehensive Regional Universities

Event Date and Time:
Friday, January 31, 2014, 8:30 AM to 10:45 AM
Location:
7th Floor, Glickman Family Library, USM Portlan Campus

How will USM’s community navigate the promises and perils of this new age?

Public higher education is confronting a series of challenges: rising tuition and student debt; a broken business model; increased competition; technology that questions our most basic assumptions about our enterprise; and an increasingly skeptical public. Yet beyond such threats lies an enormous opportunity to reach more students, increase learning outcomes, and address new markets. How are other universities, especially public regional comprehensive universities approaching these challenges? What are the characteristics of universities who are thriving? Read Professor Mehaffy’s article, review USM’s Directions Package website for updates, and come for a robust conversation about challenges and possibilities as we consider and imagine what USM will look like a decade from now.
