Entries must:

1)      Be one sided

2)      Be a 1 color design

3)      Include University of Southern Maine and/or Huskies

4)      Be appropriate…if you wouldn’t show them to your grandma, don’t send them to us!

 (No profane language, no sexual innuendo, no references to alcohol or drugs, no discriminatory or derogatory language)

All entries must be uploaded to the “What’s happening at USM” Facebook Page by October 12th at Midnight.

Voting will conclude October 17th

The winning shirt will be chosen from the three entries with the most “likes”. A panel of judges consisting of USM staff and students will make the final decision.

While visiting USM to exhibit, lecture, share and more Jamie Kruse and Elizabeth Ellsworth of smudge studios will research, explore possibilities and push boundaries in the Ci2 Lab beginning on Monday the 15th of October. Come up and assist, share or just observe and while you are at it discover the Ci2 Lab and the potential it holds for your own research.

Just who and what is smudge studio, you ask? smudge is a Brooklyn-based collaboration between artist, designer and independent scholar Jamie Kruse and New School Professor of Media Studies Elizabeth Ellsworth. Their work "meets sites and moments where the geologic and the human converge." They will conduct a workshop on a Casco Bay Lines mail boat tour with USM art students where they will create material for the exhibit.

Albebaran makes robots. They will be at the Ci2 Lab on October 17th at 11am to show off the great humanoid robots they make. Thier vision states that...

"According to the United Nations, robotics will be the technological revolution of the 21st century, just as the automobile was at the turn of the 20th century. As populations age, rapid changes in demographics are taking place. The ultimate dream of creating an artificial companion to assist humans is no longer science fiction. It is a realistic response to the needs of an aging society.

The convergence of technologies such as voice and visual recognition is leading to a new generation of interactive devices. Nonetheless, although robots are already common in the industrial sector today, there remain major challenges to overcome before robots become true personal assistants.

To provide the robotics industry with the platform, software, and tools to explore and develop the applications of tomorrow, Aldebaran Robotics designs, produces, and commercializes autonomous humanoid robots."

... and Aldebaran is making robots today such as the--

NAO a programmable, 57-cm tall humanoid robot with the following key components:

  • Body with 25 degrees of freedom (DOF) whose key elements are electric motors and actuators
  • Sensor network, including 2 cameras, 4 microphones, sonar rangefinder, 2 IR emitters and receivers, 1 inertial board, 9 tactile sensors, and 8 pressure sensors
  • Various communication devices, including voice synthesizer, LED lights, and 2 high-fidelity speakers
  • Intel ATOM 1,6ghz CPU (located in the head) that runs a Linux kernel and supports Aldebaran’s proprietary middleware (NAOqi)
  • Second CPU (located in the torso)
  • 27,6-watt-hour battery that provides NAO with 1.5 or more hours of autonomy, depending on usage

Description:
Eliot Cutler - founding chair of One Maine, Muskie School advisory board member, entrepreneur, and public servant - will talk about the challenges and opportunities that public servants and state and local governments will confront during the next two decades in Maine. We need to change Maine's equations. How do we make Maine younger, wealthier, more efficient, and more diverse?

The lecture, sponsored by the USM Muskie School of Public Service, is free and open to the public.

Speaker Bio:
Eliot CutlerEliot Cutler has forged a 40-year career marked by success in government service, law, and business. As an aide to Senator Edmund Muskie, he helped craft the Clean Air Act, the Water Pollution Control Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. From 1977 to 1980, he served as Associate Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and was President Carter’s principal aide in the environmental, natural resources, and energy areas.

A graduate of Harvard College and Georgetown University Law Center, Cutler is Emeritus Trustee of the Thornburg Investment Trust, a family of publicly traded mutual funds. Cutler also was the first American member of the board of directors of the worldwide construction company Skanska AB and a director of the International Law Institute. He was an independent candidate for Maine governor in 2010, finishing second by a margin of 9,000 votes; his 36.3% of the votes was the highest percentage of any independent candidate for major office in the United States in 2010.
