Nancy RichesonDr. Nancy Richeson
Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies; Coordinator of Gerontology Certificate Program

Dr. Nancy Richeson has been at the forefront of developing recreational therapy interventions for use in the care of older adults. “Non-drug, psycho-social interventions are important alternatives because pharmacological treatments have limited effectiveness for certain behaviors in older adults with dementia––and can have serious side effects.”

Dr. Richeson’s research interests include creating evidence-based practice in recreational therapy by testing the effects of such interventions as animal-assisted therapy, Reiki, and pedometers. In addition to coordinating USM’s online gerontology program, she teaches a variety of courses in the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department as well as health/geriatric-related course work, including wellness education and health in later years.

Recently Dr. Richeson and her colleagues developed a recreational therapy assessment in long-term care titled the BANDI-RT. She has been on the board of directors for the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification. She was recognized as the American Therapeutic Recreation Association's Member of the Year in 2003 and in 2011 was awarded the Scholarly Achievement award. In 2012, Dr. Richeson took on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the American Therapeutic Recreation Journal

Mike BradyDr. Mike Brady
Professor and Department Chairperson

Dr. E. Michael Brady is Professor of Adult Education and Chairman of the Department of Human Resource Development. After early wanderings through a Roman Catholic Seminary (BA and MDiv from St. Mary's Seminary and University) and the profession of Social Work (MSW from the University of Connecticut), he earned his PhD in adult education and gerontology - also at UCONN - and has settled happily for the past twenty-one years into the life of a teacher and scholar.

Mike teaches graduate courses in the history and philosophy of adult education, action research, facilitating learning, and gerontology. In addition, each summer he teaches his only undergraduate course while traveling an average of 3000 miles by motor coach. "Baseball and American Society: A Journey," which began in 1996, has been the subject of dozens of media reports and has won a national award.

Mike is a founding member of what was known at the time as " Senior College" but later became the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). In his role as senior research fellow at OLLI, he investigates a wide range of issues and questions related to learners over the age of fifty.
