Marcia B. Baxter Magolda will share findings from her 26-year study of young adult learning and development, highlighting cognitive, identity, and relational growth necessary for achieving higher education learning goals and success in adult life. She will use video clips to illustrate a learners journey from authority dependence to self-authorship and give participants an opportunity to analyze the extent to which narratives from the study reflect the developmental journey of their students. Baxter Magolda will also describe the Learning Partnerships Model, which articulates the challenging and supportive conditions that promote learning and development. Examples of the model’s implementation in diverse curricular and co-curricular contexts will help participants judge the model’s utility in their own educational practice. The interactive workshop format models learning partnerships by inviting participants to share their experience, explore the complexities of their educational practice, and collaborate in envisioning practice that effectively promotes learning and development.
