A recent feature story in The Forecaster newspaper on Maine's growing Islamic population included interviews with two people from USM: Reza Jalali, a USM coordinator of multicultural student affairs, and Fahmo Ahmed, a Somali student who attends USM's Lewiston-Auburn College.
Courtney Bosse of and Azia Gilbert have a passion for helping others. And it shows. But the creators of the Husky Hunger Initiative couldn't have grown the program so quickly without teamwork, support and inspiration from their educators.
After pursuing a bachelor's degree for more than two decades, Kathryn Oak figured the fuss and frenzy of commencement might overwhelm her. However, when the 48-year-old mom marches into Portland's Cross Insurance Arena on May 14 to receive her diploma, she won't be alone. Her mother, Karen Oak, 71, will be at her side. The pair will be sharing the event, each dressed in their caps and gowns.
And they will likely be holding hands.
