USM will host an reception with Wabanaki cuisine, drumming and Honor Song to celebrate the opening of the "Indian on Indian" exhibition by artist George Longfish. The event is planned for Thursday, Oct 6, 5-7 p.m. at the Art Gallery on the Gorham Campus.
The African American quest for citizenship, equality, and justice and will be the focus of a USM event on Oct. 12 with history, poetry and singing. It is titled "Becoming American: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Meaning of Race and Citizenship in the Jim Crow Era."
Patricia Thompson Leavitt, an assistant professor in the USM School of Nursing, has been awarded the 2016 Mary Cushman M.D. Award for Humanitarian Service for her work as a teacher and as the volunteer executive director of a free rural clinic.
Anne Honeywell (M.S. Biology, 2014) published "Intensity, rate, and outcome of agonistic interactions in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina concolor) vary with density on haul-out ledges," coauthored with her thesis advisor, Dr. Chris Maher, in the Journal of Mammalogy.
Laura Kargul, internationally acclaimed pianist and music professor at the University of Southern Maine School of Music will give a solo recital entitled "Composers on the Edge" at Corthell Concert Hall at USM in Gorham on Friday, October 21 at 8 p.m.
