co-chairs Patricia Vampatella and Cindy Boyd, participated in National Wreaths Across America Day on December 13 by volunteering with 100 volunteers in laying wreaths on Veterans’ graves at the Togus National Cemetery.
Within a half hour of receiving the wreaths, volunteers had decorated 1400 Veterans’ graves in a designated section at Togus. It is hoped that one day ALL graves will be so honored with a wreath. The wreaths are provided by the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington in Washington County and it is now in its 23rd year of providing wreaths for Veterans’ servicemen and women’s graves.
The noontime ceremony with representatives from all branches of the U.S. Services laying a commemorative wreath at the base of the flagpole was held simultaneously with ceremonies across the country in honor of the fallen Veterans. A three gun salute was fired with a bugle playing “Taps” ending the ceremony. Senator Angus King was unable to be present and sent Elizabeth M.S. MacTaggart to speak in his behalf.
Senior College members were honored to participate and found the experience moving and gratifying to be part of the nationwide event.
