Franco-American Collection Celebrates Grand Re-Opening

Franco Collection Ribbon Cutting

The Franco-American Collection celebrated its grand re-opening in much larger premises at USM LAC Saturday, October 5th, 2013.  The ribbon-cutting ceremony was overseen by Andrea Quaid, district representative for U.S. Congressman Mike Michaud.  Rep. Michaud was unable to attend the opening due to the Federal Government Shutdown.

In addition, the opening was attended by USM LAC Dean Joyce Gibson, USM Provost Michael Stevenson, and a number of representatives from state and local government.

The event included live music by the Collection's own "Troubadours" who lead the monthly sing-along sessions, and a lecture by University of Maine Professor, Kristin Langellier, enititled "Mémère, Meme, and Me."

The Collection's new space features more room for visitors, and the ability to host visiting school groups; more exhibition space, and the ability for researchers to make full access of the Collection's holdings, including microfilm of "Le Messager", the local French newspaper, hundreds of hours of French music, and numerous movies on videocassette and DVD.

The Collection is open to the public free of charge, Mondays-Thursdays, 9am - 4pm.
