The public is invited to celebrate Christmas with a festive French flair at “Joyeux Noël ,” a free family event taking place on Saturday, Dec. 11, at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College.
The centerpiece to the occasion is a 2:30 p.m. concert by the Vermont folk trio Va-et-Vient, whose varied repertoire of traditional songs from French Canada features finely honed vocal harmonies backed up on guitar, accordion, flute and percussion. Following a break for refreshments, the group will lead the audience in a sing-along of French songs both seasonal and secular, with lyric sheets provided so that all can join in regardless of their level of French fluency.
Va-et-Vient is a member of the touring artist roster of the Vermont Arts Council. Recent appearances include French Heritage Days at Vergennes, Vt., where they were the headlining act, as well as the Chantez-Vous Bien Chez Nous festival in St.-Bernard-de-Michaudville, Quebec, where they were the first-ever non-Canadian group invited to perform. Hailing from a region where, like Maine, a large percentage of the residents are of French-Canadian descent, the group is dedicated to keeping the vibrant Franco culture alive for people of all ages through performances and education.
