USM Art Department and Gallery Winter and Spring 2014

January 6, 2014

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine (USM) Art Department and Art Gallery have announced a diverse and engaging schedule of exhibitions, lectures and events for the winter and spring of 2014.

Three well-known artists also will be working with USM art students and will make free public presentations later this year.

Shawn O’Connor, ceramicist and USM art alumnus, class of 2005, will work with students as the featured visiting artist of the winter 2014 semester. Anna Hepler and Andrea Sulzer, acclaimed Maine printmakers who explore the boundaries of two- and three-dimensional work, will collaborate with students in a shared seven-week artist residency.

A variety of exhibitions, including USM art faculty, student and alumni shows, will be displayed at the Art Gallery, Gorham campus, and AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, Portland campus.

“The annual USM faculty, student and alumni exhibitions offer an eclectic mix of artwork and are an excellent opportunity for the public to view the creative range of the USM Art Department,” said Kim Grant, USM art professor and department chair. “This year’s faculty show, which showcases recent artwork in a variety of media, also will present a special look back at the paintings of retiring professor George Burk.”

George Burk, USM associate professor of painting and drawing, is well known for his small, exquisite, detailed landscape paintings done in acrylic on museum board. He works on several paintings at a time, capturing the changing tidal patterns and lighting of his subject. Burk is retiring after a teaching career of almost 30 years at USM. The 2014 USM Art Faculty Exhibition will be his last USM art faculty show.

Each year, four visiting artists and scholars are invited to enhance USM’s cultural environment by engaging in student art critiques, demonstrations, art exhibitions and lectures. O’Connor, a ceramist best known for his wood firing techniques, will work with USM art students to construct a paper kiln, a slightly modernized version of ancient ceramic firing processes, which is built for one-time use. O’Connor will present a public slide lecture, after which attendees will be invited to view the outdoor kiln.

“Shawn was amazing as an art student at USM and has continued to build an impressive career in ceramics,” said Carolyn Eyler, USM director of exhibitions and programs.

The USM Artist-in-Residence Program invites artists to stay for an in-depth appointment during which the AIR maintains open studio hours, involves students in the creation of an artwork, and greatly contributes to the fabric of the USM community.

In a shared artist residency, Hepler and Sulzer will explore a venture similar to a collaborative woodblock project they created with Bowdoin College students in 2009. Hepler and Sulzer will work with USM art students to create large-scale woodblock prints, which they will unveil in a public presentation and then display at Pickwick Press in Portland’s art district.

“Anna Helpler and Andrea Sulzer are two of Maine's most well-known and interesting artists,” said Eyler. “We are especially pleased with the fresh energy and personal impact that they and Shawn O’Connor will offer the Art Department, university and surrounding community.”
