Continuous Enrollment
Continuous enrollment requires that every
graduate student must earn at least six credits
toward his or her degree program every calendar
year from the time of first registration to
completion of all requirements for the graduate
degree. The following courses aid students in
maintaining continuous enrollment status.GRS
601 is a noncredit course that carries a fee and
entitles the student to continued access to USM
computer, library, and recreational facilities,
and fulfills the continuous enrollment
requirement. It is designed for students who are
working on a capstone, thesis, or dissertation;
it does not grant a student part-time or
full-time status for financial aid purposes.
GRS 602 is a 1-credit course that
permits master’s degree candidates to
retain eligibility for financial aid, including
University-funded fellowships, scholarships,
graduate assistantships, loan deferment, and
access to University services, including USM
Libraries and Internet. Students may not sign up
for GRS 602 for more than two semesters. This
course option is primarily intended for students
who have completed coursework for the master’s
degree, but have not completed their thesis or
capstone; however, it may be used in unusual
circumstances by students who are enrolled in
less than 9 credits of coursework to maintain
full-time academic status while engaging in
pre-thesis work or a special project for
faculty. Enrollment in GRS 602 requires that
students have certification of adequate academic
progress by both their program faculty advisor
and the Office of Graduate Studies.

well as to maintain visa compliance, eligibility
for health insurance, and access to University
services, including USM Libraries and Internet.
Prerequisite requirements: passed qualifying
exams, registered for less than 6 graduate
credits (including PPM 799), adequate progress
